NATIONAL TEAM/ELITE ATHLETE TRAINING
Part
of the mission of TNZ is to facilitate athletes developing from
national competition success to performing with distinction at
international events.
Wherever possible TNZ selects athletes several months prior to
competition to enable them to focus on
peaking for the event. The National Team Coach will monitor
progress as well as taking training sessions with the
athletes.
Training for this level of competition focuses on many areas, including;
Physical fitness, strength and speed - athletes undertake individual programmes to ensure they peak for major tournaments.
Technical
development - through seminars and training camps ensuring
techniques and footwork are correct, and the ever important repetition
drills until techniques and combinations become second nature.
Development of 'ringcraft'- no matter how much training an athlete
undertakes, the experience gained when in competition can't be
duplicated. Top performers fight in three or four domestic
tournaments and several internationals per year. For
many of the World Championship team preparation included competing at
the Commonwealth Championships in Brisbane, and the Oceania
Championship in Auckland.
