About Taekwondo Training Programmes

NATIONAL TEAM/ELITE ATHLETE TRAINING

Part of the mission of TNZ is to facilitate athletes developing from national competition success to performing with distinction at international events.

Wherever possible TNZ selects athletes several months prior to competition to enable them to focus on peaking for the event.  The National Team Coach will monitor progress as well as taking training sessions with the athletes.

Training for this level of competition focuses on many areas, including;

Physical fitness, strength and speed - athletes undertake individual programmes to ensure they peak for major tournaments.

Technical development - through seminars and training camps ensuring techniques and footwork are correct, and the ever important repetition drills until techniques and combinations become second nature.

Development of 'ringcraft'- no matter how much training an athlete undertakes, the experience gained when in competition can't be duplicated.  Top performers fight in three or four domestic tournaments and several internationals per year.  For many of the World Championship team preparation included competing at the Commonwealth Championships in Brisbane, and the Oceania Championship in Auckland.

Kukkiwon Dan Grading

To be eligible for entry into WTF sanctioned events, black belts require a Dan grade certificate from the Kukkiwon in Seoul, South Korea.  This is facilitated by the President of the MNA in accordance with the Kukkiwon grading articles.  In New Zealand this is through Grandmaster Kim, Pesident of TNZ.

Technical Advisory Committee

The Technical Advisory Committee is made up of senior Masters and is responsible for developing the technical aspects of the sport.

Seminars and Training

Most instruction in Taekwondo is performed by member organisations and clubs.  TNZ offers parallel learning opportunities for students and instructors through seminars and specialised training with - for example - the  National Team Head Coach and National Poomsae Coach, as well as overseas Masters.

2008 will see the introduction of a National Referee Certificate and training course.
