3 TNZ Athletes Selected for London Olympics

Taekwondo New Zealand is pleased to announce that Vaughn Scott, Logan Campbell and Robin Cheong have been selected to represent New Zealand in the Taekwondo event at the 2012 London Olympic Games. Both Robin and Logan will become double-Olympians having previously competed at the 2008 Olympics, while Vaughn Scott will make his Olympic debut in London. All three athletes have competed regularly at top level international competition under TNZ's High Performance programme over the last two years.

TNZ Junior Kyorugi Development Seminar & Referee Refresher Course

TNZ’s second Junior Kyorugi Development Seminar of the year was held in Auckland over the weekend of March 3rd and 4th. In attendance were the TNZ National Head Team Coach Grandmaster Oh, the TNZ National Junior World Championships Team coaching staff, including the National Team Doctor Bren Dorman, and former New Zealand and Samoan National Coach, Master Kesi O’Neill. The seminar weekend also included a TNZ Referee Refresher Course run by two of TNZ’s WTF International Referee’s Mike Burk and Garry Carpenter.

Kiwi International Referees Overseas

Kiwi International Referees to Officiate at Olympics & Junior World Championships

Master Vijay Chhika and Master Stan Wagner have both been selected as International Referee’s to officiate at the 2012 WTF Junior World Championships in Egypt during April.

In addition, Stan Wagner has also been selected by the WTF to officiate at the 2012 London Olympics in August. This is the first time that a Kiwi International Referee will officiate at the Olympics in Taekwondo.

New Zealand Wins Bronze at US Open

Taekwondo New Zealand Senior HP Athlete Vaughn Scott won Bronze at the US Open held in Las Vegas 21st – 24th February. Competing in the under 80kgs senior male division, Vaughn won the Bronze by winning three out of his four matches. This included wins against USA and Brazil, and a TKO win in his second match. The semi-final against Great Britain was also close which eventually went to Great Britain Olympian Aaron Cook. We will have more photos and story on the US Open and Team Training in Mexico shortly.

TNZ Junior World Championships Team Announced

TNZ is pleased to announce the following representative team to compete at the 9th WTF Junior World Championships to be held in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, 4th - 8th April, 2102. The team is as follows:

WTF awards Citations to TNZ Officials

Two TNZ Officials, Garry Carpenter TNZ Operations Manager and John Schofield TNZ Funding Manager were recently presented with World Taekwondo Federation Citations for their outstanding contribution to the development of WTF Taekwondo in New Zealand. The Citations were presented to Garry and John on the 28th January in Auckland by TNZ President Grandmaster Kim on behalf of the WTF President, Dr Chungwon Choue.

WTF International Poomsae Judge Certification Course

Last year, Taekwondo New Zealand applied to host the 15th WTF International Poomsae Judge Certification Course. In late January of this year, the WTF announced that TNZ had been successful with it's application to host this course from the 12th of March to the 16th of March 2012. It is expected that countries from around the Oceania, Asia and the Pan-American regions will also take the opportunity to attend the course.

First TNZ Junior Kyorugi Development Seminar

TNZ invited under 17 Kyorugi member athletes to the first of a series of open development seminars which was held in Auckland over the weekend of the 28th & 29th January. In attendance were the TNZ Junior World Championship Team Coaches, Trainer, Manager, Team Doctor, National Team Head Coach and members of the TNZ High Performance Team.

TNZ Secretary General visits Kukkiwon

On his trip to Korea during October, TNZ Secretary General Master Matt Ransom also visited the Kukkiwon. The purpose of the visit was to discuss development opportunities for New Zealand that are on offer and to look at the processes and administration behind the Kukkiwon World Taekwondo Headquarters.

Hayley Schofield - Young Achiever Award

At the recent New Zealand Martial Arts Hall of Fame Awards held in Auckland on the 12th November, TNZ Senior Female Team representative, Hayley Schofield joined a group of young martial artists from a number of different styles who were recognised for their achievements with a special award issued by the New Zealand Martial Arts Institute. The NZ Martial Arts Hall of Fame and NZ Martial Arts Institute were established to recognise the efforts of Kiwi Martial Artists and this year’s Young Achiever Awards were a first.
