2013 Taekwondo New Zealand Open

This was a huge tournament and the biggest ever for Taekwondo New Zealand. Held on the 27th April 2013 at the North Shore Events Centre in Auckland, the competition started at 9.30am and finished just after11.30pm. By the end of the day, 551 Kyorugi players and 148 Poomase players had taken part in the Taekwondo competition. The competition was spread across 5 mats with one mat for Poomsae (closing at 5pm), and four mats for Kyorugi (with a fifth mat opening at 5.20pm).
This year there were many entries from India, Australia, Tonga and New Zealand. Each year this event just keeps getting bigger. The opportunity for our athletes at all levels to compete against the best in New Zealand, and against top international competition is not to be missed.
We also introduced some new innovations at this year's event. The Black Belt sparring competition was run as a round robin event with three of the divisions then having semi-finals and finals to determine the winners. The Poomsae competition was judged using a newly developed TNZ iPad based scoring system. This sped up the process of judging considerably.
At this year's TNZ Open the level of competition was notably high at all levels and in all age groups including colour belts. Even little yellow belts (7 to 9 years) were throwing spinning back kicks with accuracy, speed and power and had the crowd on it's feet right throughout the competition. The Black Belt Sparring and Poomsae competition was at a World Class level.
All participants, athletes, coaches, referees, judges and officials were exposed to an intense and high level of competition that will only help them further develop their training methods for both Poomsae and Kyorugi. This is an event which we encourage all members to attend annually as it keeps you up to date at all levels and ensures that your athletes from grass roots to elite level are exposed to the very best here in our own country.

Taekwondo New Zealand would like to extend a very big thank you and congratulations to the Tournament Director Garry Carpenter and his hard-working team of volunteers and organisers without whom this event and it's success would not have been possible. And a big thank you as well to all the competitors. Your behaviour, spirit and effort was exemplary. To the coaches and instructors; we also extend a big thank you for your professionalism, help, support and patience on the day. It was a magnificent effort by all.
Without the countries, clubs and volunteers who participated at the 2013 TNZ Open, this event would not have happened. We truly appreciate and thank you all for your participation. We look forward to an even bigger event next year. Don't miss it!
