Oceania Olympic Qualification Results- September 2011
The first WTF Continental Qualification Tournament for the London 2012 Olympic Games was held in Noumea, New Caledonia on 11th September, 2011. A total of 35 athletes from 11 countries participated in the event with hopes of securing positions for London. Up for grabs were a total of 8 Olympic spots with four male and four female Olympic Weight Divisions contested. The tournament was held at the Martial Arts Hall in Doumbia, nearby Noumea. This was also the venue for the 2011 Pacific Games Taekwondo competition in the week leading up to this event.

This year there was a good spread of final results with four Oceania countries grabbing at least one slot each to the Taekwondo competition at next year’s London Olympic Games. Subject to meeting their respective National Olympic Committee’s final selection criteria’s, the qualified countries are New Zealand (3 places), Australia (2 places), Samoa (2 places) and Papua New Guinea (1 place). Samoa has earned it’s two slots for the first time in its history since it became a full member of the WTF in 1997. This was also a great result for New Zealand qualifying more positions than Australia (our biggest rival) and other Oceania countries.

Here’s a quick breakdown of the final results. Theresa Tona from Papua New Guinea won Gold in the women's under 49kg division.  In the women's under 57kg division, Robin Cheong (NZ) defeated Caroline Marton from Australia. While Carmen Marton from Australia won against Hayley Schofield (NZ), with Hayley taking the Silver in the women's under 67kg division. In the women's over 67kg division, Talitiga Crawley from Samoa earned her country it’s first-ever slot.

In the men's under 58kg division, 2011 Universiade gold medallist Safwan Khalil from Australia outpointed Marshall Islands' hope Sam Jason awarding the Gold to Australia. Logan Campbell (NZ) took the Gold In the men's under 68kg division after winning against Papua New Guinea. In the men's under 80kg final, Vaughn Scott (NZ) defeated Hader Shkara from Australia. In the men's over 80kg, Kaino Thomsen from Samoa beat Tqufato Pita from Tonga 7-3, giving the country it’s second qualification slot.

Congratulations to all of our four New Zealand medal winners. Robin Cheong, Logan Campbell, Vaughn Scott and Hayley Schofield won a total of three Gold and one Silver at what was a highly competitive event and with so much at stake. All four athletes have worked very hard with many long hours of training in the build up to this tournament. They have been competing internationally, managing injury recovery and have faced many challenges along the way. We are very proud of them all.

From here the nomination criteria between the New Zealand Olympic Committee and Taekwondo New Zealand will be applied for the final confirmation stage of selection for the London Olympics. We wish our athletes all the very best.

TNZ would also like to thank the National Team Head Coach Master Oh, the National Team Manager Master Mike Hannah and the National Team Doctor, Dr Bren Dorman for their hard work in supporting, training and coaching our athletes over the last two years. To help get them through to this stage required a lot of hard work behind the scenes. Also a big thanks to our President Grandmaster Kim, Master Matt Ransom, Master Yorick Neal, John Schofield and Garry Carpenter for their administration support of the New Zealand Team and Management. The athletes and officials also express their gratitude again for the many messages of support from the New Zealand members and supporters during their build up to this event.
